A Legacy of Service: Reflecting on Jeanette W. Weldon’s 16 Years of Leadership at CHEFA

As Jeanette W. Weldon prepares to conclude her tenure as Executive Director, CHEFA reflects on a period defined by innovation, thoughtful leadership, and a belief in the transformative power of public finance.
When Ms. Weldon joined CHEFA in 2009, she brought with her a rare combination of technical expertise and personal conviction. Her background in healthcare, investment banking, and financial advisory work gave her a strong foundation in the complexities of nonprofit financing.
From the beginning, Ms. Weldon saw CHEFA as more than an issuer of tax-exempt bonds. She saw it as a catalyst—an organization capable of anticipating needs, adapting quickly, and supporting nonprofits in ways that directly affect Connecticut residents. She embraced CHEFA’s nimble structure, working with a small but highly skilled team to modernize its programs, reimagine outdated policies, and develop strategic plans grounded in real community needs.
Under her leadership CHESLA, CHEFA’s education finance subsidiary, experienced significant transformation. CHESLA expanded beyond traditional student loan programs to offer need-based scholarships, build financial literacy resources, and enhance workforce development support. One of Ms. Weldon’s most cherished experiences was attending CHESLA’s annual scholarship events. Standing face-to-face with students whose lives were shaped by the organization’s work reaffirmed her long-held belief that public finance can open doors and uplift families.
Her leadership legacy is equally reflected in the culture she nurtured. CHEFA became a place where staff are encouraged to question assumptions, propose new solutions, and embrace creative thinking. She valued strategic planning that was inclusive, energetic, and grounded in expert insight—bringing staff, board members, and outside partners into collaboration. That spirit of shared ownership will continue to shape CHEFA’s direction long after her tenure concludes.
As Ms. Weldon prepares for her next chapter, she leaves CHEFA with strengthened programs, a more agile strategic approach, and a team prepared to lead with the same integrity and commitment she modeled. Ms. Weldon’s retirement will be effective as of June 30, 2026. CHEFA’s Board of Directors will conduct a search process to select the Authority’s next Executive Director.
