CHEFA Awards More Than $1 Million in Grants to Support Connecticut Healthcare, Education, Childcare, and Cultural Organizations

June 1, 2023-The Connecticut Health and Educational Facilities Authority (CHEFA) awarded more than $1 million in grants through its FY 2023 CHEFA Nonprofit Grant Program. The grants were made in the education, healthcare, childcare, and cultural sectors. Grants were made for both program and capital expenditures.

The eighteen awards provide grants to entities throughout Connecticut. Betty Sugerman Weintraub, former CHEFA Manager of Grant Programs and Philanthropic Outreach stated “CHEFA is one of the only statewide funders in Connecticut and one of the only funders providing both capital and program grants. For over twenty years, CHEFA grants have provided vital support to Connecticut nonprofit organizations. Our grants are making a meaningful difference for residents of the state.”

“The grants represent investments in our four core priority sectors that every day are meeting the needs of residents throughout Connecticut. CHEFA’s support of the Nonprofit community through grants, tax-exempt bonds and loans, and other financing continues to provide resources to essential organizations working to solidify the fabric of our state.”

Jeanette W. Weldon, CHEFA Executive Director

CHEFA’s Board of Directors voted at their May 17th Board Meeting to award $1,007,453 representing a significant commitment to the nonprofit community. In addition, the Board had previously voted to dedicate $100,000, of the overall funds available to be awarded, to the Cultural sector, a new initiative meant to provide specific support to a vital sector spurring economic activity throughout CT.

The awards come at a time that the nonprofit community is seeing an end to some of the pandemic-era funding that has supported their programming and operations.

CHEFA’s Grant Program was established in 2002 and has provided more than $46 million dollars since inception to CT nonprofit organizations.
